  1. CLOVIS -- Turns out Johnny Carter can't just waltz into the CIF State Track and Field Championships and do whatever he wants.

Carter, who shocked the state by winning the boys triple jump title last year as a freshman, struggled during Friday's preliminaries. He qualified for today's finals in seventh with a jump of 47 feet, 2.75 inches, but he had a foul and a short jump in his other two attempts and walked away from the event with his shoulders slumped.

"It was a bad day today," he said. "Bad runway, bad jumps."

Carter threw down a 49-0.75 to win the event as an unknown last year in Norwalk, but this year has been different, starting with groin and ankle injuries that sidelined him for more than a month this spring, though he says he's recovered -- and ending with his status at the state meet.

"Everybody's expectations are really high, so if I let them down, I feel like I'm disappointing everybody that came," Carter said.

Still, he survived a shaky performance to jump another day. The best mark today was 49-8.75, so Carter has his eye on 50 feet -- what would easily be a personal record -- and another state title today.

"I need to get my focus a lot better than today," Carter said. "I know I can go 50."

  2. CLOVIS -- For Ridgeview's Johnny Carter, there was more than one way to top the state triple jump championship he won last year as a freshman.

One of the more painful ways was to reach the podium again this year, in second place, despite a rash of injuries that shortened his season by a month and left him unable to train for extended periods of time.

Like last year, Carter hit a big jump on his final attempt. This year, it was a wind-legal personal record of 48-9.5 (his winning mark of 49-0.75 last year was wind-aided).

"I have a better feeling than last year," Carter said. "I can't explain it. I'm just blessed to get second."

Hammed Suleman of Deer Valley won the event with a 49-7.5 -- five of Suleman's six throws were better than anyone else's. But Carter stepped up the occasion in a big meet again even though his season was derailed early.

Carter aggravated a hip flexor injury by running into a barricade on a practice jump early this season, and the pain spread into his lower back. Then, as a trainer tried to stretch him before a meet a few weeks later, Carter pulled his groin. The pain eventually spread all the way below his knee before Ridgeveiw and Carter's club throwing coach, Kim Jenkins, shut him down for a month.

He came back for the Central Section's South Area meet and kept at it until he had a silver medal to go with his gold from last year.

"I can't be mad; I did the best that I could," Carter said. "I'm proud of myself, and I've still got two more years."

  3. Suleman Hammed of Deer Valley, the State leader and ranked No. 2 in the nation, opened up at 48-4 to take a lead he never lost as he followed that effort with jumps of 49-5 ½, 48-10 ¼, 49-3 ¾, 49-7 ½ and 48-10 ¾. Hammed did get a scare in the final round when Johnny Carter of Ridgeview, the defending State champion as s freshman, uncorked at 48-9 ½ jump on his final effort to move from sixth to second. In what had been a disappointing season for Carter, the mark was a seasonal improvement of almost 18 inches. Obum Gwacham of Ayala was third at 48-4 followed by Patrick Hunter of Paramount at 48-3 ½ and Curtis Wilson of Rancho Verde at 47-11.
